Atmosphere at the Ridge today reminded me of some meetings preceded by wine-and-cheese, but in fact it seemed to be just Rotarians enjoying a summer day and a chance to gather for fun and fellowship.

Generous Slices Are A Good Thing
Following President Dave’s ringing the bell, which did result in some lessening of the noise in the room, Art Bradbury delivered a very thoughtful message invoking all of us to be enthusiastic and cooperative as we support our new club president during the remaining 50 weeks of his reign.

Everyone lined up for a savory meal highlighted by sole stuffed with crab and scallops, accompanied by brown rice and a colorful mix of fresh beans and carrots alongside a tossed green salad with bottles of Blue Cheese and Thousand Island dressing on the side.  Generously sized slices of carrot cake were appreciated by all.

Moving on with the meeting, President Dave welcomed two guests from Glastonbury, Bob Dugger and Bob Bentley.  We also had Vincent Crawford with us.  He is joining the club as part of the corporate membership, Board of Education, so may or may not be considered a guest at this time.  Steve Jacoby and Jim Fallon led us in the Welcome Song.

Neal Cunningham reported fines ranging from someone being rude to the usual back-and-forth between the Red Sox and Yankee contingents in the room.  More seriously, he noted that both Kevin Kickery and Dick McCarthy are enjoying having their grandkids in town, and Steve Jacoby is hoping for the safe arrival of his granddaughter in Australia where she will be attending the University of Queensland.  We also learned that Marc & Lori Glass have just celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary and recognized Bob Wood’s 32nd Rotary anniversary.  Vincent Crawford shared a few very positive comments about his May 20th wedding which was followed by a two-week honeymoon driving from Napa vineyard area all the way down to San Diego.
Anwar Moves Up; Jennifer Moves On
With regard to more formal club announcements, President Dave notified the club that both Laura Floyd, current director of East Hartford YMCA, and Minerva Gomez, retired hotelier, have been approved by the board for club membership.  This is the second publication of their names as required by our club bylaws.  If anyone has any reason to object to their joining our club, please get in touch with Dave immediately.

Dave also let us know that Anwar Hossain will be joining the club board as a director.  We also learned that Jennifer Jones has had to resign from the club due to her changing jobs.

President Dave reminded us to visit our club’s website at http://www.easthartfordrotary.org and mentioned that our weekly High Gear report will appear there at top of the home page thanks to extra efforts by editor-in-chief Doug Willett.

President Dave shared with us a thank-you note from Bill Saunders, expressing how he and Bev have enjoyed a great meal at one of their favorite restaurants, Burton’s, where Bill recommends the scallops, and how much they are looking forward to their visit to Waters Edge Resort  and Spa.

Golf committee co-chair George Schoen announced that there will be a golf committee meeting one week from today, July 19th, at 11:30, here at the Ridge. Marc Glass added he is ready to receive items for the auction; drop these off at his office at 17 Silver Lane, across from Town Fair Tire, or arrange to give him items at a regular club meeting.

Bob Dugger reminded us that our annual joint meeting with Glastonbury will occur Monday, July 24th at the Elks Club in Glastonbury.  For those who have not been to their summer picnic site, the address is
98 Woodland St, South Glastonbury, CT 06073.  The cost for dinner is $20, which will most likely be the prime rib dinner we always enjoy.  Drinks and fellowship begin at 6 PM, dinner will be served at 7 PM.

Also, just noting in order for everyone to save the date:  our summer Picnic, where members and spouses/partners are all welcome, will be at Kevin and Sue Kickery’s home, 38 Bancroft Road in East Hartford on August 9th.  Any problem finding the house, call Kevin at home 860-569-8184.
Money Goes to Money
Our meeting concluded with Bob Wood selecting the winning raffle ticket, and the lucky winner turned out to be... Bob Wood.  A lesson to all, keep on purchasing those tickets!.

Talk to you next week,
Sue Klock
