Good afternoon from my perch here at Farmington Bank in West Hartford. I’ve just returned from our weekly get together and am subbing for Wes Willett as he traded dates for today. Perhaps he knew the weather would be foul and the food would do little to cheer him up. So, I invite you into my cozy confines as I attempt to elaborate on a small but feisty gathering of 27 Rotarians.

God's Speed, Herb
I was early as the duo of Jim Fallon and Bob Wood called a meeting of the Scholarship Committee. The applicant packages were disseminated to the committee with instructions on how to evaluate. These guys know the drill so we listened eagerly. Next Wednesday at our weekly meeting we will provide the club with the applicants that we feel meet the standards the scholarship requires, with special emphasis on “service above self”. Stay tuned for this very happy event that will be followed in May with the recipients being invited to our meeting for the award ceremony.

As the gathering throngs assembled, the microphone was being tested. Even Bill Saunders voice sounded like Darth Vader. Someone remarked “I think its working”! Observant we are.

There were many discussions about the passing of Herb Barall. Herb was a good man who made this Rotarian feel like I was a twenty year member. Rest in peace, friend. Herb's calling hours are Thursday at D'Esopos from 2 to 7. Funeral Services there on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Dan Russell was sporting a bit of a band aid cover near the part in his hair. I asked him about the fashion statement but he insisted there were 8 staples under it. This happened getting into his car last week. Luckily there was not a concussion and he is mending well.

Moe Moshovos was sporting a new shorter haircut. I love asking him questions about things because his stories are funny. He sat down at the barber thinking he was in chair # 3. After seeing what his stylist was doing he said why so short? He said you asked for a number 3 haircut and that is the short one. It could only  happen to our friend, Moe.

Ceil Collins was downsizing Frank’s closet by giving away his Rotary ties. Nice selection of silk neckwear. I shared a hearty laugh with Frank and Jack on getting old. We need to laugh about this because “what else ya gonna do”.

The bell rang and song broke out. It was followed by a sincere reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and an equally sincere rendering of an invocation by our own Happy Jack Martin.

Off to the food table. The buffet offered mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, Salisbury steak, white bread and salad. Much digging for the sparse tomatoes. Apple pie was offered for desert. Further comment withheld.

Marc Pays For Companionship
There was a movement to join two tables into one but when Marc Glass asked if there was room for one more we all said NO! He is such a good sport that he went back to the other table and offered money to people to sit with him.

George Agnelli was the only late entry as Steve Jacoby was already here for the Scholarship Committee meeting. For the record, he was late for the committee meeting.

At 12:41, President Bill called us to order. The welcome song was bellowed and the microphone was tested again. Test 1, 2, 3.

Jack Martin ascended the podium with a step stool and gave the Sargeant at Arms report. There was a few bucks pledged and frankly, most of the entries were seeking humor on this dreary day. Marc Glass paid in memory of Herb Barall. Jack Sayer told a funny story about Jack getting lost on his way to a poker game and not having any money when he got there. Bill Saunders paid because Jack whines all the time. This writer wanted to throw in a buck when his bride, and reigning Empress remarked, “welcome to my world”. Perfect timing, Mary.

Hope Firestone celebrated her birthday but would not allow husband Dan to sing with us. He later asked for the money back he contributed as retribution. Nick Cecere celebrated a Rotary anniversary. This writer celebrated the announcement of our third grandchild due in November. Anwar Hossain paid for the lack of Spring after he previously had celebrated its arrival. Ned Lynch paid as his son is on the Wesleyan Lacrosse team and they have taken 13 teams in a row to the cleaners.

Thanks to Dave Amberg for putting together the various committees that keep us going. Jay Stewart was acknowledged for her selling the most raffle tickets in the first week. I bought one from her on the sidewalk outside Anderson’s Jewelers. Good job Jay. Jack Sayre updated us on the Senior Luncheon to be held the same day as the raffle, June 7th. The Board agreed to spend $7,652 on five separate initiatives that support the schools in town.
Jenn Jones is home recovering from back surgery and we wish her well. . And lastly, Jim Watts won the raffle amongst a few groans.
Our Neurosis is Mostly Stenosis
A speaker was not originally scheduled for today. But due to the perseverance of Dan Firestone, and fortunately he was emptying the garbage last night, his neighbor agreed to come today and speak. Not about garbage or living next to the Firestones.

Jesse Eisler, MD and PHD is an accomplished orthopedic surgeon specializing in Stenosis. He currently practices out of Hartford Hospital but his resume of studies, training and practice is international in scope. Basically he treats ailments associated with the spine, neck and back.

The Rotarians were fixated on this talk as many shared their own personal stories and many of us wanted to make an appointment with him after the presentation. He spoke of the advances in technique (robots) and outcomes (home on same day as surgery). It was a fascinating presentation that could have gone much longer but alas our time had drawn to a close.

Bill stood up, summoned the speaker for the traditional book signing and off we went to our jobs, further socialization or a nap.

All good from this writer.  Kevin Kickery
