Another nice, sunny June day at the Ridge. Lots of youthful energy filled the air courtesy of the high school scholarship winners present for lunch with us today. Hopefully, the Golf Committee, conducting its initial meeting for this year, was imbued with this youthful spirit.

A Touch of Youth Today
President Bill has arrived at his penultimate meeting in his second reign as our leader and he is decompressing at a rapid rate.  There is an “ask me if I give a ….” vibe about him and the Installation Dinner next week can not come at a better time for him. He called the meeting to order, called for the Invocation, and called one and all to the usual buffet. Chicken Kiev, rice, string beans, salad, cookies and brownies made up the repast.

Today marked Dick McCarthy’s return to our midst and one and all greeted him with open arms. Great to see Dick ensconced in his chair one again.

The introduction of guests signaled the start of the meeting proper. Marc Glass introduced Patricia Donoghue, a local business woman who made the mistake of asking Marc what Rotary was all about. Hopefully the meeting sparked an interest.

Also present were Daniel Crovo (CIBA and late Rotarian Jack Davis’s grandson), Bryan Lee Koski – Bissonette (EHHS), Anna Maria Sousa and her mom (Ct. River Academy) and Qeanna Rampassard (EHHS), four of our six Rotary Scholarship Winners for this year. Art Bradbury and George Schoen led a spirited rendition of the Welcome Song while vigorously moving around the room. The legendary Roger Driggs would have been proud.

President Bill called Dan Russell to the podium to present him with a Paul Harris pin recognizing his status as a Paul Harris Plus 5 donor to the Foundation.  Thanks, and congratulations, Dan.

Bob Buettner provided the Sergeant at Arms Report highlighted by several members (Lynch, Schoen, and Happy Jack Martin to name a few) who were delighted to note that the Red Sox, heavily favored to win the American League East in the pre-season, were living up to their potential as sole occupants of first place in the league for one day in the middle of June.  None noted how ephemeral all this could be and how long it is to October.  Ruthie Sheehan, who no doubt bought into all this Beaner hysteria, paid to recognize a grandson’s graduation.

Jim Watts paid for his 33 anniversary with the Club, Marc Glass paid for a wedding anniversary, Dan Russell paid for lack of a pin, Bob Wood paid to welcome the Scholarship winners, and Dick McCarthy paid because he was glad to be back.

No Noon Meeting Next Week
Dan Larson informed the Club that he had a health scare last Friday, with chest pains necessitating a trip to the hospital in an ambulance. Turns out the coronary tests were negative and the only finding was that he has a big heart which we all knew anyway. The enlarged pumper can be treated with medication. Dan successfully avoided a brain scan during this ordeal.

Jay Stewart is currently resting comfortably in Hartford Hospital while she recovers for the insertion of a pacemaker. Cards and calls would be welcome so her spirit can cheer you up.

On the annoucement front hold August 9th for our annual evening picnic to be hosted by Kevin and Sue Kickery.  Also, a reminder that our Installation Dinner is next Wednesday at 6 p.m.  at the Gallery in Glastonbury. No noon meeting next week.

We received thank you notes from the Abelon Foundation and from the second graders at Mayberry who enjoyed the field trip to the shore we sponsored for them. The Golf Committee will meet again on July 5th

Frank Collins won the raffle this week.
UConn Is The Choice This Year

The meeting concluded with our scholarship winners saying a few words about themselves, their high school activities and their college choices and potential majors.

All four of our $2,000 recipients are headed to UConn in the Fall with Daniel planning on a career as a special education teacher, Brian interested in business management, Andrea hoping to enter UConn as a sophomore due to courses she has already accomplished, and Qeanna pursuing a career as an actuary.

If these four young people are representative of all six of this year’s scholarship winners, our future is in good hands and East Hartford High School has much to be proud of.

Have a good week. Enjoy the Travelers Golf Tournament which is honoring my old boss, Jay Fishman. Those of you using Steve Jacoby’s driveway, please leave a tip in the flower pot.
