Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
— Margaret Mead

Great day and a great week for our club.  Though we had a small group gathering at The Ridge today, we were all ready to celebrate what we can accomplish following our successful golf tournament Monday.

Two best things - a success and it's over!
President Bob got the meeting underway with the pledge.  Bob Wood delivered a very thoughtful invocation reminding us that smallness does not equate with powerlessness.  The above quote, attributed to anthropologist Margaret Mead, seems to have been written for a Rotary Club such as ours.  Committed people can change the community and the world.  Bob asked that we give thanks for the opportunity to fulfill our motto of Service Above Self

With those thoughts in mind, the stampede began.  Lunch offerings were a variety of appealing sandwiches, ranging from roast beef to tuna, and a chopped salad with a choice of dressing, rosy vinaigrette or ranch.  Everyone seemed quite happy with today’s lunch, which was followed by a plate of extra-large cookies, passed by our own cookie monster, Ned Lynch.

President Bob began our meeting by expressing his appreciation of the outcome of our golf tournament:  beautiful weather, eighty golfers, and a great showing by the usual volunteers.

Prayers for Jackie; Thoughts for Steve

Caring Moments:  Jackie Jacoby is still recovering at New Britain Hospital.  While we are asked to refrain from visiting, an email or card to Steve would be thoughtful.  Here is his contact information.

Address is 5 Lower Heatherwood, Cromwell, CT 06416-2714, cell phone (860) 280-5690, email  Stephen_Jacoby@yahoo.com .

After last week’s meeting and the presentation by Toral Maher of Liberty Bank, the Board met and voted to join the bank’s Thanksgiving fundraiser.  This is clearly a win-win for us and the bank.  Stay tuned for more about this in November.

On September 26th, 4 to 6 PM, President Bob will be at the Intercommunity Health to participate in distribution of kits to destroy opioids found in a typical household.  He is hoping to have two of us volunteer to be with him there.  Please contact Bob if you can help with this.  Intercommunity is doing the publicity for this.  Our club has provided them with 50 kits which were given to us by our district at no charge.

President Bob mentioned Coats for Kids will occur October 20th, and the usual helpers are ready to help that day.  He also mentioned that he has been contacted by Jo-Ann Dorn, Program Supervisor at East Hartford Social Services, and has assured her we are willing to help again this year with efforts at Thanksgiving and during the December holiday season, including the Secret Santa project.

The Academy of Finance is having a breakfast October 23rd, which will be attended by students and faculty, where there will be sharing of information about the academy.  Vince Crawford is looking for a few of us to join them that morning.  The breakfast’s timing is 7:30 to 9 AM.

Back to reality,

Golf Committee Co-chair, George Schoen spoke briefly about Monday’s tournament.  We had 80 players, three corporate sponsors in addition to several major sponsors.  The auction and raffle was a great success.  The bottom line is it appears we exceeded last year’s proceeds, close to $19,000.

Sergeant-at-Arms report, Jack Martin had a long list of folks contributing for a successful golf tournament.  Probably the most meaningful is George Schoen who is simply happy it is over. Special mention for George and Peggy Schoen and Bill Saunders for all they did to make the tournament the best ever.  Bill Saunders paid fines because daughter Tracy won the club championship at the East Hartford Women’s Golf League, Team Liner/Saunders won second low net at our golf tournament, and following the tournament, members of his family who came long distances to be involved all arrived home safely in Newport, Atlanta and Madrid, Spain.  Note that Bill brought in his granddaughter from Madrid to chauffeur him in one of our two beverage carts Monday.  Dan Larson was praised for once again serving as our emcee for the evening.  On a different note, Dan Firestone is happy his grandson, Ben, will be attending the University of Arizona.  Ned Lynch decorated his office with Patriots posters, covering the Red Sox.

Really have to applaud Jack Martin.  He was subbing for Jim Watts who was supposed to have been subbing for Marc Glass.  Jack did a fantastic job!

Raffle results:
Neal Cunningham won the “regular” raffle.
Peter Klock won the beautiful flower arrangement donated by Bob Buettner.

Submitted by Sue Klock, Rotarian.
