Under a sunny sky at mid-day, we gathered at the Ridge for our weekly fellowship. The ringing of the bell by President Bill got us to our feet to sing the Rotary Song followed by the Pledge-of Allegiance.
Sherryl O’Connor, filling in for Susan Hansen, gave the invocation on the subject of peace. I learned something new; the United Nations has declared September 21 as the International Day of Peace which is observed around the world. We heard the message that true peace can prevail if we rid the world of war on a global scale but also rid domestic violence and child abuse from our homes and community.
Buffet lunch consisted of chicken in mushroom sauce, baby carrots cooked to tenderness, ziti with herbs, rolls and salad with a choice of three dressings, or was it four? I was too busy filling my plate. Ice cream and two kinds of brownies were served in the meeting room to top off our lunches.

Dan Firestone delivered the Sergeant-at-Arms Report. Dick McCarthy paid for keeping the Red Sox going, Steve Jacoby for being late (no surprise there), John O’Connor for no pin and the O’Connors for the upcoming vacation. Marc Glass paid for the Eagles, Doug Willett for his thirty sixth Club Anniversary with clarification that it was actually in March and the Empress for leaving early.
Happy Jack Martin had to work extra hard today to give out five Raffle prizes. Cash went to Jim Watts, third time in just a few weeks, four tickets for the Big E to this writer, two rounds of golf at East Hartford to Kevin Kickery, four rounds of golf at Blackledge to Art Bradbury, three boxes of peanut crackers to Jay Stewart and last but not least, triple nut bowl to Neil Cunningham.
you would have to go back about 20 years to the River Highlands course to find a more miserable day to play our annual tournament than this year. It was raining buckets all morning and continued for the first hour and a half on Monday. However things then began to clear up and all but one wimpy group finished play. The usual delicious dinner and raffle expertly emceed by Dan Larson followed. Thanks to George and Bill’s leadership and a host of the usual volunteers, the day was an unmitigated success. Congratulations to all who participated and contributed in one fashion or another.
