It was a bright, sunny spring day at the Ridge this week, however not very many members were there to enjoy it. This is sort of a good news / bad news situation I believe. Although we had only 17 seats filled for lunch, those that did not attend were all out getting their raffle tickets sold. President Kevin had an emergency meeting (dealing with People’s Bank branch issues at the Stop & Shop locations?) at work, so District Governor Nominee Marc Glass was at the podium.
Neither need you tell me,” said Candide, “that we must take care of our garden.”

After the song and the pledge, Marc gave the invocation as well. I thought it was particularly nice, so I have included it here.

For the Garden of Your Daily Living

PLANT THREE ROWS OF PEAS:

Peace of mind

Peace of heart

Peace of soul

PLANT FOUR ROWS OF SQUASH:

Squash gossip

Squash indifference

Squash grumbling

Squash selfishness

PLANT FOUR ROWS OF LETTUCE:

Lettuce be faithful

Lettuce be kind

Lettuce be patient

Lettuce really love one another

NO GARDEN IS WITHOUT TURNIPS:

Turnip for meetings

Turnip for service

Turnip to help one another

TO CONCLUDE OUR GARDEN, WE MUST HAVE THYME:

Thyme for each other

Thyme for family

Thyme for friends

Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.

Bev breaks arm; Bill goes on diet

After enjoying a meal of rotisserie chicken breast, mashed potatoes, carrots, beans, salad and assorted treat for desert, District Governor Nominee Marc started the meeting proper by having us sing the welcome song for the guests that were not there. He then called on Happy Jack Martin for the Sgt at Arms report. Bob Buettner and Larry Hangland paid for bad deeds yet to be committed. Dan Firestone paid for Hope’s birthday and also to celebrate the end of tax season. Neal Cunningham and Bob Woods paid for the Red Sox. Dan Larson paid to celebrate the start of the E H Golf League’s season. Art Bradbury paid for more chicken on everyone’s plate. Your humble scribe paid in thanks for all the Rotarians that did not attend the meeting due to ticket sales efforts.

Caring Moments included Marc reporting information on Bill Saunders wife, Bev. She fell and broke her arm and is being evaluated to see if surgery is needed. Bev says she is doing fine though. Bob Buettner announced that it was Andy Andreo’s 91st birthday last week. Dan Firestone contributed that Past President Rodger Nicholson also celebrated a birthday this week.

Noted Speaker prefers Ohio
Announcements included that the Scholarship Committee is meeting next week, April 24, at 11:30. The District Assembly is scheduled for Wed May 15, 7:30 AM – 12 PM. The club President, Treasurer, Secretary and President Elect are expected to attend. It is at the Doubletree in Windsor Locks.

April 27th is game night. Please bring an appetizer or desert if you plan to attend. The club will provide beer and wine. There are still places for 32 more people.

President Elect Bob Buettner would like to know if people are interested in participating Habitat for Humanity this year. The project will be for a residence in East Hartford. Please let him know if you would like to participate.

Rotary in Motion is an event that East Hartford, Manchester and Rockville Rotary Clubs are sponsoring. It is a multi-modal race (walk, run, roller-skate, bike) event on Oct 13. The club will be manning a water station. The event is to celebrate the opening of Charter Oak Trail.

June 26th will be President Elect Bob Buettner’s installation dinner at The Galleria.

Laura Floyd was scheduled to be the speaker, but as was reported last week, she is in Ohio meeting her new grandchild. Ceil Collins won the 50-50 raffle. Marc picked the winning ticket for the flower raffle, which happened to be his own. This was met with a lot of suspicion. Calls for the 4 Way Test to be applied, you can just imagine. George Schoen however, told Marc that he deserved them for all the abuse he put up with during the meeting.

Until next week, Wes
