As I got out of the car at 5:45 for an away meeting at the Manchester Country Club, my car thermometer read 64 degrees.  It’s been a very Spring like week and one that the golf courses in the area really appreciated.  So much for climate change!

Enjoyable Evening with Manchester Rotary
I met President Bob and Ruth Sheehan in the parking lot and continued to the dining room and paid the $15 charge.  The three of us were later joined by 9 other East Hartford Rotarians bringing our numbers up to 12, just 5 short of the 17 Manchester Rotarians in attendance.  Where have all the Rotarians gone????!!!

After a short social hour, the meeting was called to order by Manchester President Bob Rodner. After the usual Pledge to the Flag, the Four Way Test, and a thoughtful Invocation we were all welcomed by President Rodner.

Our own, and now District Big Wig, Marc Glass updated us on the upcoming District Conference which is being held at the Cape Codder Resort in Hyannis May 1-3 in conjunction with District 7950. Cost for the Conference will be $269 per person plus $125 per night hotel cost. Partial reservations are available.  Sign up at www.Rotary7950.com

A great buffet consisting of salad, vegetables, mashed potatoes, roast pork, breaded cod, rolls, and assorted cookies and cakes, was served.  Our table was envious!  After the meal, announcements and introductions were made. No Welcome Song followed - but we are unique!

unique!

Drum Circle Takes Us Out of Comfort Zone
President Bob introduced Craig Norton, our program leader for the evening. Craig is a professional percussionist and uses drums in a variety of cultural, learning, educational, and support programs.  He had the group form a large circle and supplied all present with a variety of drums.  He gave a little background on the traditions and uses of drums in West Africa and then gave lessons on drumming to a bunch of musically challenged Rotarians.

By the end of the session he had the group sounding like they knew what they were doing – and even having fun doing it! Along the way he introduced the Art of the African Dance with some volunteers dancing to the beat of the drum in the telling of an African story. Craig uses his skills in corporate team building situations, school classrooms, and hospitals, and psychiatric wards. A very interesting program!!

President Bob Reacts to Coronavirus Threat
Important message from President Bob:

"As you know by now, I have cancelled the meeting at Goodwin and postponed the PH Dinner to a date TBD. The fear of the Coronavirus has changed the way we think and act. Most if not all public meetings. schools, churches and sporting events have been cancelled or postponed for weeks to come.  We are being advised to limit exposure to crowds and even self-quarantine.  In light of this I am setting up an old-fashioned phone tree to watch out for fellow Rotarians

Please log into our website on Club Runner, go to the list of members in EHRC and call the person listed below your name daily.  Just ask if all is okay. Do they need anything and are they feeling okay?  Let them know we care and EH Rotary is there for them if needed.  if a situation arises where help is needed.ie in the case of self-quarantine , food whatever, contact me and EHRC will assist.

If you would rather not take part in this please let me know.
Thanks for reading this, take care of yourself, stay well."

A special thanks to Larry Hangland for filling in for me last week.

That’s it for now.  ‘til next week – Bob Wood
