President Kevin rang the bell promptly at 12:15.

Art Bradbury delivered a heartfelt invocation with a Rotary focus.

Then everyone lined up for a mix of dishes:  yellow rice, beans, penne in a red sauce, ham slices and Caesar salad.  Dessert was miniature pumpkin spice muffins.

Marc Honored For Foundation Support

Always reliable song masters, Art Bradbury and George Schoen, led the group in the welcome song. Today we welcomed Kacie Tourville, Wes Willett’sstep-daughter, and our speaker, Cindy Cieslak.

Sergeant-at-Arms Bob Buettner reported several fines paid ranging from our president’s having had a great trip to North Carolina to Ned Lynch’s unwavering support of the Red Sox.  Peter and Sue Klock are celebrating the birth of Zoë and Max, twins born in Paris yesterday to their son Felix and daughter-in-law Stephanie. Jim Watts gave a sad news/fun news report that his only son is moving to Philadelphia but is not becoming an Eagles fan.

Today’s raffle was won by Neal Cunningham, who donated his winnings to the Sgt-at-Arms fund. The flower arrangement was won by Dave Amberg.  Thanks again to Bob Buettner for donating this beautiful arrangement.

President Kevin recognized Marc Glass for his generous, continuing support for The Rotary Foundation, presenting Marc with his Paul Harris+5 pin. Marc is well on his way to becoming a Major Donor and deserves a big thank you from all of us.

Announcements

This year’s Holiday Party will be Wednesday evening, December 5th at The Gallery.  Cocktails begin at 6 PM with dinner at 7 PM.  Meal choices are prime rib, filet mignon, salmon, or a vegetarian option.  Cost is $50/person.  All Rotarians please save the date, check with your significant other about main course preferences and sign up at our club meeting or email Ceil Collins ceilcollins@aol.com .

Jack Sayre had signup sheets for Salvation Army bell ringing at our club meetings.  We are committed to four Saturdays beginning the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Jack mentioned he needs more folks to sign up for that day.  Please contact him if you can donate an hour of your time and need to know what time slots are still unfilled.  Jack’s home phone is 860-646-4298, email is JSayre6@cox.net

In honor of our Thanksgiving holiday, there will be a social half-hour with wine and cheese just prior to next Wednesday’s meeting.

When planning your holidays in December, President Kevin said the board has approved not having a meeting December 26th, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s.  There will be meeting on Wednesday, January 2nd.

Kevin also mentioned the board approved allocating $2400 to buy gift cards and other items for two East Hartford families.  In past years, club members have also contributed $400 to help pay for meals for those two families at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Neal Cunningham is passing an envelope at our meetings to help raise the funds to do that this year.

And finally, Kevin mentioned that we truly have something to celebrate because Bob Buettner has agreed to be our President-elect, serving as club president during the 2019-2020 year.

Last week's speaker

Jairo Lemos spoke enthusiastically about his experience at the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) this last Saturday and thanked the board for sponsoring him.  Jairo said his takeaway from the experience was a strong sense the power Rotarians have to impact positively not only our own communities but internationally beyond our borders.

After that Jairo introduced today’s speaker. Cindy Cieslak is an attorney and partner in Rose, Kallor LLP.  She represents and advises private and public sector employers and employees on matters pertaining to employer-employee relations.  This topic could be an entire law course, but Cindy was able to deliver a very informative talk by focusing on one Connecticut law which concerns pay equity, and especially on an amendment to the law, which becomes effective this January, prohibiting employers from asking applicant’s about details of the prospective employee’s wage and salary history.  An example she gave was that the employer can ask whether a person received a benefit of some sort but cannot ask about the value of the benefit.

This was a great program.  Thanks Jairo, our club’s program chair.
