It was a dark and stormy night… Well, it had been a stormy day and it was not quite dark when we gathered at Goodwin College, but it makes a good opening line. The golf committee was having its final meeting before the annual tournament as people arrived. Our room at Goodwin appeared to be set up for another event. There were extra tables set up and they all had tablecloths. The working theory is that since the Goodwin College Golf Tournament had been scheduled for that day, if it hadn’t been rained out we would have been much more crowded. We had 20 people in attendance, which seems to be the average for the evening meetings.
Flags and Bells are AWOL
Past President Dave Amberg was filling in for President Kevin, who was vacationing in Maine. After calling the meeting to order with some sort of hand bell, Past President Dave started us off with the Rotary Song. We then pretended there was a flag in the usual corner and pledged allegiance. Hope Firestone gave the invocation, and we all proceeded to the buffet table. Dinner was this awesome lasagna, both beef and meatless versions. Plus salad, bread, and cookies for dessert. The expiration of our contract with the lunchtime caterer can’t come soon enough.
Jack Martin, filling in as Sgt-at-Arms collected $1 from everyone. The premise was that everyone just gives a dollar and we don’t have to come up with things to donate in honor of. I was going to ignore George Schoen and Ruth Sheehan’s calling out the Red Sox as well as Marc Glass’ Superbowl Champion Eagles (yawn). But then Dave Amberg donated in honor of the Green Bay comeback, and since this scribe has Aaron Rodgers as his Fantasy Football Quarterback, I guess we have to record them all. Dave donated for Notre Dame football as well. We didn’t have any caring moments.
Upcoming Events
Upcoming events include the Hartford Marathon and the Rotary Water Station. Neal Cunningham has sent out information on how to sign up. Anwar Hossain is coordinating a FoodShare Volunteer day. Anyone interested in helping to sort food for this tremendous charity, the date has been set for Monday Oct 15 from 12:30 to 3:30. The District Foundation Dinner will be held November 1st. And, despite one Rotarian’s confusion, we ARE meeting at Sunset Ridge next Wednesday for our weekly meeting, even though the golf tournament is Monday.
Golf Tournament update : We have 20 foursomes playing this coming Monday. We don’t have as many sponsors as last year, but we still expect to raise a decent amount of money for our Charitable fund. Hopefully we will see everyone at Manchester Country Club. Registration opens at 10am. 10:30-11:30 is the putting contest, after which a lunch buffet is available. Shotgun start begins at 12:30.
