Mother Nature sure smiled on all of the East Hartford Rotarians as they came up the hill to the Ridge - A beautiful Fall Day, trees at their peak, and a gentle breeze certainly made us all appreciate the best of what she has to offer. Inside the hall it was evident that we all were having a tough time coming to grips with the loss of our beloved Rotary Brother, George Agnelli. If ever there was a perfect example of” Service Above Self”, it was George. As president Kevin noted “he was a noble man, true to family, community, and Rotary!” He will truly be missed. Speaking for the entire Club our thoughts and prayers go out to Eleanor and family.
Fireside Chats Next Week
President Kevin brought us together with a moment of silence for George. Jack Martin followed up with a thoughtful Invocation sharing in the fellowship of Rotary and offering peace and comfort to George’s family. We adjourned to the ever-present buffet table to find our day’s nourishment. Before us was a feast of rice, cauliflower, roasted potatoes, an unidentified chicken dish (but actually quite good), roast pork loin, rolls, and salad. Again, cookies for dessert, but of a much better quality than many of their previous offerings! It should be noted here that Ceil Collins had each table decorated with appropriate Halloween center pieces, and also supplied a huge “Trick or Treat” basket of old-fashioned Tootsie Rolls for us to indulge our sugar cravings! Thanks, Ceil!
President Kevin rang the bell softly so as not to disturb the senior set who might be equipped with hearing devices. He mentioned that our Club will be well represented at the Foundation Dinner and that we are expected to receive an award or two. He called out attention to the up coming Fireside Chats which will be held next week. Locations – 11/5 at the Kickery Mansion, 38 Bancroft St. EH, 860 944-6365 - 11/8 at the Jacoby Castle, 5 Lower Heatherwood, Cromwell, 860 316- 5505 - and 11/8 at the Wes Willett Estate, 94 Summerset St., EH, 860-559-5732. All meetings will begin at 7:00 PM. Steve Jacoby provided an incentive to increase attendance at his Chat – All who Come will get a pass and parking to next year’s GHO! If you have signed up for a particular Chat and can’t make it, call the host. Likewise, if you are going to change, call the host and let them know you will be coming!!!

Boston Beaners Rule the Roost Yet Again!
At the Board meeting held 10/29, it was decided to continue with the Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army – four Saturdays – 11/24. 12/1, 12/8, 12/15 with Jack Sayre handling the sign ups. The Interact Club will also participate. We will also continue with the adopt a family for Christmas with Neal Cunningham as the coordinator. As to the Club finances, we are in a healthy condition thanks to successful fundraisers this year. President Kevin also noted that Linda Chamberlain is starting a group at the Sunset Ridge School based on our motto “Service Above Self”. She will speak to us about the activity at a later meeting. We will also participate with Goodwin College in their annual $30 and a Turkey Program on November 15th from 8-12.
Sgt at Arms George Schoen had a good day, particularly from contributions from dedicated Red Sox Fans – Ruth Sheehan, Bob Wood, Ned Lynch, Dan Larson, and George himself! Bill Saunders gave for Ceil’s decorations, Jim Watts for several mispronunciations, Bob Buettner for a great vacation, Jairo Lemos in memory of George, and Marc – the igles is still world champs! Cash raffle winner – Jack Martin, and the Buettner arrangement to Dan Larson!

Lifetime Learning at MCC
Anwar Hossain was called upon to introduce our speaker for today, Carleigh Schultz, Director of Credit Free Offerings at Manchester Community College. She spoke about MCC offering a lifetime of learning opportunities for all ages starting with children’s programming from age 5 and continuing throughout the age spectrum - Cooking classes, music classes, hobby enhancements, and almost any interest group you might like. They have a number of one-hour noon lectures on a wide variety of topics. The offerings are too numerous to note here but complete catalogues are available at the college. What a great resource to have in our neighborhood. Thanks Anwar for bringing this resource to our attention.
