It was another cold day at the Ridge, with some rain sprinkles added this week for our added enjoyment. At least the heat was working inside, even if a little too well. George Schoen was collecting for lunch; Jack Martin was selling raffle tickets and Larry Hangland was again hitting people up for Sergeant at Arms donations.

Donations in the spirit of Rotary giving

President Bob rang the bell, we sang and pledged, and then Jim Watts gave the invocation. He called on all of us to reaffirm the Rotary motto to help heal the partisan division that currently afflicts the country. Lunch was Chicken breast with corn and salad. Ned Lynch made the rounds with the cookies we had for dessert. We had 3 guests today, and so sang the Welcome song for District Governor Mark Brady, Assistant Governor Randi Saboski, and Enfield Rotarian Bill Squires.

DG Mark Brady sees need for change
After the usual business was concluded, Assistant Governor Randi Saboski introduced District Governor Mark Brady. Governor Brady talked about what is needed in order to keep Rotary going in the future. Clubs need to change the way they operate if they are to survive. He had several good suggestions. We need to recruit more women and minorities. We need to have more hands-on projects and one way to do that would be to devote every 5th meeting of the month to doing a project in lieu of the regular meeting. Provide any new members with a $500 budget to fund a project of their choosing. Use the 6 Areas of Focus to help sell Rotary as a place to make a difference. Those are: Promoting Peace, Fighting Disease, Providing Clean Water, Saving Mothers and Children, Supporting Education and Growing Local Economies. We talked about a lot of these ideas during our Fireside Chats, so hopefully we will be implementing some of them soon.

Bob Wood won the Raffle. Oops, that was last week. This week Bob Wood drew the raffle ticket that Dan Russel had purchased. Dick McCarthy won the Flowers. Again. 5 out of the last 6 weeks Dick McCarthy has won the flowers. There were calls for an Audit Committee to be established, but really, who would want to set the kind of expectations at home that he must live up to now. J

Until next week, Wes Willett
