It was a good group that gathered for our weekly Zoom call yesterday. Um day before yesterday. Anyway, last Wednesday at the regular time. Your scribe is exceedingly late turning this in. Don't blame the editor, even if he does deserve some grief for lying about in the 80-degree weather while we are all here shivering. Sell raffle tickets During the pre-meeting discussion Jack Sayre revealed that our favorite librarian and former East Hartford Rotary member, Susan Hanson has moved to Delaware. Everyone agreed that she was a big loss to the club when she departed.
Big improvement in Pledge delivery this week
President Bob Buettner started the meeting by denying us all the privilege of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Guess he had as much as he could stand last week of everyone saying it at their own pace, so he recited it for everyone. Sell raffle tickets Bill Saunders, currently in the second slot on the raffle fundraising leaderboard, then did his usual excellent job presenting the invocation. During Caring Moments, Ruth relayed that Ceil Collins had surgery that went well, and she is recovering nicely.
Announcements - bunch of them
Announcements
  • Scholarship Committee recommended that we present 6 $3,000 scholarships this year, since we have more to distribute than in the past. The Board of Directors approved unanimously. Sell raffle tickets
  • The scholarship recipient from last year that requested a year’s deferral let President Bob know that she would be attending Yale in the fall. So, we can distribute her award soon. Sell raffle tickets
  • The Board discussed going back to in person meetings. President Bob called for a show of hands of who would be willing to go to an in-person meeting if social distancing were observed. About 60% were willing. Bob will pursue further. Sell raffle tickets
  • Connor Martin reported that Goodwin University is open for events once again so that is a possible location for in person meetings also. Sell those raffle tickets
  • The board voted to suspend further donations until we see what the raffle brings in. We are currently at $7,455, so all costs have been covered already. Any future ticket purchases will go 100% to charity. This might be something to mention to help convince people to buy tickets. Sell more raffle tickets
  • Anwar Diana reported that Foodshare does not have the weekly 4-hour volunteer program that we used to participate in. The do have a twice a month slot to distribute food that we can participate in. This would be in East Hartford and would only require 45 mins. Please let Anwar know if you would like to participate. Knock Wes off the top of the leaderboard
  • Anwar has also applied with Bombas Sock company for a donation of socks that we could then distribute as needed. Post a link to the raffle on Facebook
  • President Bob told us that it is possible to volunteer at the vaccination activity at Rentschler field, but it is more complicated and involved than we would want as a club activity. Anyone who is interested in doing this as an individual can contact Bob for more information. Guilt your kids into buying raffle tickets :-)
  • District Governor Marc reported that registration is open for the District Conference. It is $25 for registration and that all goes to Polio Plus. The first 100 people to register will receive a gift bag. Sell more raffle tickets
  • Incoming District Governor Joanne Alfieri is going to ask each club to plant 2 trees during her year. Everyone should sell at least $300 for the raffle
  • The first meeting of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion District committee took place Monday. There will be training for people that are on the committee. I really hope subliminal programming works :-)
Diversity makes it better
We then watched a DEI Awareness TED Talk supplied by Anwar. Key takeaways included the idea that people are comforted by commonality but can grow from diversity. If you would like to watch the talk it can be found at: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=WuWmKDmJoPg

Until next week, sell those raffle tickets!
